B Series Camshaft Running In Procedure - please follow
Camshaft break in procedure.
B series are especially susceptible to premature failure if break in procedure is not strictly followed. Every manufacturer has slightly different recommendations. After speaking with Kelford cams, the following is recommended.
Use an assembly lube on camshafts and ensure followers are in perfect condition. Set tappets and timing and bleed cooling system in preparation.
Start engine and immediately reach 2,500 to 3,000 rpm, ensuring you have oil pressure.
Lightly vary rpm within this threshold to help vary oil spray and ring load - 30 minutes is required.
Note: The Speed Science B20 vtec required additional water cooling on radiator to help control temperature, as heat soak can be an issue. We run a half radiator, which is sufficient during 12 hour races, but did not like the prolonged running time. Keep it COOL and be prepared with two people and a hose.
Oil selection.
Again very important. A running in oil with high zinc content is required. Running in oils do not have detergents (which inhibit lubrication). Change oil after run in and use a high zinc oil and or zinc additive.
Please ensure this is followed, engine builders and dyno tuners tend to disregard this procedure in favour of tuning or running in rings. Please be present for this procedure and document.
